There has been a recent emphasis on the development of passive components, such as resistors, capacitors and inductors, and of similar types of electronic components that are sensitive to electromagnetic interference. These components are known to be susceptible to damage when exposed to certain radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic radiation in frequencies ranging from about 300 KHz to 100 GHz. Damage can also be caused by other forms of radiation including light and infrared radiation. This danger has been recognized by the public, and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken various steps to try to lessen the risks of damage to electronic equipment. These steps have involved the development and use of new materials in the production of electronic equipment.
